Anti-polybag drive triggers protest at Vallah market

MC officials claimed that the vendors and farmers in the market were not aware about the ban on the use of plastic carry bags. So the MC team returned their bags and issued a warning to traders to stop the use of polybags. However, no change was witnessed in the market today morning as vendors and shopkeepers were seen giving the sold items in polybags to their customers.

Seized plastic bags returned to shopkeepers after stir Amritsar, August 20 Acting on the guidelines of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), a team of the health wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) conducted a surprise check at the Vallah vegetable market and seized plastic carry bags here yesterday. The move evoked a stark reaction from shopkeepers and vendors, who argued with the MC team and also staged a protest. So the MC team returned their bags and issued a warning to traders to stop the use of polybags. However, no change was witnessed in the market today morning as vendors and shopkeepers were seen giving the sold items in polybags to their customers. Even, farmers use large plastic carry bags to transport fresh vegetables to markets. Vendors also use large bags to pack 15 or 20 kg vegetables. MC officials claimed that the vendors and farmers in the market were not aware about the ban on the use of plastic carry bags. So they issued a warning to them. A sanitary inspector, who didn’t wish to be named, said residents should inform the MC about the use of polybags so that raids can be conducted for necessary action.
